August 31 - Love Litigating Lawyers Day
Today is Love Litigating Lawyers Day, although I don’t know why we should love litigating lawyers. Frivolous lawsuits are being filed in record numbers and show no signs of letting up. These lawsuits, which are in many instances nothing short of legalized extortion, clog the court dockets and force meritorious cases to be shoved to the back burner.
Take this example. Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $780,000 by a jury after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler running wild in a furniture store. The misbehaving toddler was Ms. Robertson’s son.
Here’s another one. A 19-year-old man in Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. The 19-year-old was attempting to steal the hubcaps at the time.
There are countless examples of stupid lawsuits and greedy lawyers on the Internet. I’m sure there are decent litigating lawyers around, too. If you find one, let me know.
