July 27- Take Your Pants for a Walk Day
Unless you are wearing a dress or a skirt, you probably are wearing pants. So, by definition, as you walk, they come along. I like this holiday because it’s simple and meaningful. We often don’t take time to go for a walk just for the fun of it, but leisurely walks are one of life’s greatest pleasures—especially in the summer when you get walk in the woods. Leaves rustle in the trees. Birds fly overhead. Wildflowers dance around the ground.
Listen to your footsteps. Walking on dried leaves in the autumn is best, but wearing loud shoes is fun too. I’ve always found the sound of my footsteps reassuring–proof that I’m real and have an impact on the world around me.
Lately I’ve been taking walks with my grandson. You can’t be in a hurry with a two-year-old. Two-year-olds refuse to move in a straight line toward a goal. They’re always stop for interesting little side trips. Jack will stoop to pick up a pine cone and a few minutes later throw it aside to pick up a stick or a rock. He points at birds, dogs, cars that go by… All things I wouldn’t even notice. Today, when you’re taking your pants for a walk, try to notice what you pass. Remember, it’s not so important where you’re going, it’s the journey itself that counts most.
