July 13 - Embrace Your Geekiness Day

geek.jpgWe all remember the geeky kids from high school. They were the first to embrace computers, were religiously devoted to comic books, had seen “Star Wars” twelve times, had annoying laughs and got straight A’s. Then they all grew up to be our bosses…

Today we pay homage to our geeky friends and the inner geek within all of us.

How do you define a geek?

• A person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination.
• A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media.
• A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance.
• A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream.

Who among us can say no to all of the above?

Perhaps you’d prefer to think of yourself as a “stealth geek.” Stealth geeks are defined as people of above-average intelligence (often referred to as ” brains”) with a deep, almost passionate, devotion to some academic, technological or scientific subject; an interest in science fiction and/or fantasy books, television, movies or comics; a bit of a loner who doesn’t always fit in with the mainstream, but who has learned to blend in with the “real world” through behavior and looks.

Today is the day to check out the latest gadgets, order the latest Harry Potter book or re-read “Lord of the Rings.” The world would be a lot more tame if we all gave a little love to our inner geek.
